Over the weekend I had the chance to do some deep dive work around leadership and business and what became apparent to me was that we need even more creativity and innovation now. Over these past many weeks, I have coached many leaders feeling the desire to move through this pandemic in new ways that will keep them top of their game. Those leaders who reached out to me understand the value of keeping in tip top shape in the face of disruption.
I am seeing the word ‘pivot’ used a lot in current articles, but I am going to challenge that word. In dance, when you do a pivot turn, you stay on one foot and turn 180 degrees and you don’t travel. You are basically staying in place when you do a pivot turn, the direction of your body changes.
What we need now is a revival. A revival can be defined as “an improvement in the condition or strength of something” and in the performing world it could be recreating a new play/dance based on a previous version. I performed both in exact replications of older dance pieces as well as full re-creations of pieces with some newer elements that gave them a fresh look. What we need now is fresh and exciting.
Are you doing a business revival? Have you created ideas around new products or services you can be offering for the immediate future or even for the long haul? A pivot turn will keep us in the same place, what we need is that forward momentum, a grand jeté with maximum effort. There is no more playing small on the stage. There have been many revelations about our businesses in these past many weeks in light of this pandemic. How will you land center stage?
