In these challenging times with many world issues creating fear above and beyond our normal fears, it is critical that we don’t lose sight of what fear is and how it impacts us.
Leaders feel fear. Followers feel fear. I love how Brené Brown (2018) in her newest book ‘Dare to Lead’ describes how our response to fear is truly the obstacle that prevents us from being brave leaders. Think about that for a moment. Do you see yourself as a brave leader? Are you at the helm to make the tough decisions, have the hard conversations, and instill inspiration and motivation in your people? Are you an influencer?
What is your fear story?
You may have also heard the words ‘lean into your fear.’ Oftentimes our instinct is to run, that old flight or fight response kicks in when we feel threatened or panicky in some way. Fear is a powerful emotion AND a powerful motivator. How we choose to handle that fear is well within our power and control. You can flow with that fear and feel what is underneath it and how it makes you feel OR you can run and decide to avoid and not face it at all.
Are you willing to change your fear story? How might finding your own brave leadership guide your team to new heights?
Now is the time, leader, to flow with the fear. See it, feel it, address it, use it to your benefit. Attend to the fear and allow it to give you strength to make changes. You may stumble and fall but I bet you will be stronger when you get back up and face it. Keep the flow.
